Al Bayan

هَذَا بَيَانٌ لِّلنَّاسِ وَهُدًى وَمَوْعِظَةٌ لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

‘This is an exposition for mankind, and a guidance and exaltation for the reverent ‘ is found in ayat 138 of Surah Imran and is a summation of the nature of the Quran and man's relationship to it. The central word in this ayat is the word ‘bayan’ which has the following meanings: the act of explaining, the faculty of speaking and thinking, the ability to express oneself. 

In the context of this verse the word ‘bayan’ can refer to the whole of the Quran as an exposition or of the verses prior to this surahs revelation. This term gains an added importance when we remember that the ability to think and speak is what elevates man above the animal world. This gift of thought and speech is not to be squandered on frivolous things. Thus, we as Muslim do not face the challenges of life mindlessly but with the ultimate aim of showing gratitude and remembrance to Allah.
