About this piece

Traditional Islamic calligraphy is written on ahar paper – sheets treated by hand with starch, alum, egg white and glue, then burnished until the surface is hard enough that ink sits on top of it rather than bleeding into the fibre. We make our own. The pen is a qalam, a reed cut to a specific angle for the script, and the line thickness changes with the angle of the hand rather than with pressure.

This is the oldest way of making the letterform, and it is the reference every carved piece is drawn from.

Care

Dust with a dry or barely damp cloth along the grain. Keep out of direct sunlight and away from radiators. Full care guide.
