“Did you suppose, then, that We created you frivolously, and that you would not be returned unto Us?” is found in ayat 115 of Surah Al-Mu’minoon. This verse encapsulates the Islamic understanding of man and his purpose in the world. The verse contextualizes not only the creation of man but all of the world. The verse charts the journey of creation from its inception to its existence in the world and culminating in its inevitable death and return to its Creator. In this conception human existence, and by extension all existence, is not pointless, arbitrary, or self-serving. Rather, the purpose of all Creation is to honor Allah by obeying His commands and to cultivate goodness and virtue through submission to His command. Thus, the Muslim must always be in a state of deep reflection and awareness of the ultimate aim of existence and eventual return to Allah.
